How is the Western Region doing? Measuring regional development
The Western Development Commission’s second WDC Policy Briefing How is the Western Region doing? Measuring regional development provides a statistical snapshot of the Western Region of Ireland. The Briefing illustrates how the region is developing over time and how it compares with other parts of the country.
A range of indicators of the region’s current level of development and its future growth potential are examined. The indicators compare the situation in 2007, the peak of the boom, with the most recent available figures and also compare the region with the rest of the state.
Why care about regions? A new approach to regional policy
The Western Development Commission has just published a short Policy Briefing Why care about regions? A new approach to regional policy. It is based on analysis conducted by the WDC and draws on findings from recent work by the OECD on the role of regions and their contribution to national growth. It highlights the importance of investing in all regions and emphasises that rural areas can and should contribute to the national economy.
This is the first in a series of Policy Briefings which will highlight and provide discussion and analysis of key regional policy issues.
