The Western Development Commission (WDC), under the EU-funded Creative Edge project, has selected four creative companies from the West of Ireland to attend two creative events in Skellefteå, northern Sweden in June 2013.
Following a competitive call for applications, the WDC will support four businesses to attend the Film Master Class and Creative Summit. Both events will be excellent opportunities to learn from the highly developed Scandinavian TV, film and design sectors, as well as network with creatives from across Sweden, Finland and Norway. The four businesses are Galway-based Spirit Films, Leitrim-based Bandit Films, and LG Productions and Lone Star State both based in Donegal.
Paddy McGuinness, Chairperson of the WDC said, ‘We’re delighted to support four creative businesses from across the Western Region to attend these events. For the TV and film sector, international links are absolutely critical. Many productions simply can’t get off the ground without funding from different countries. The connections made at these events will be invaluable. We’ll also organise a workshop later in the year where they will share these experience with other western companies.’
‘The Film Master Class will mainly focus on the development of formats for TV. It’ll be a great opportunity for West of Ireland production companies to learn from the recent success of Scandinavian TV. Speakers include the CEO of the company responsible for ‘The Bridge’ series,’ according to Ian Brannigan, Head of Regional Development at the WDC. ‘The Creative Summit has a very eclectic mix of speakers from design, communications and technology. By supporting four West of Ireland creatives to attend, we hope they’ll bring lots of innovative ideas back.’
Support is being provided through the Northern Periphery Programme (NPP) funded Creative Edge project which aims to increase export activity by creative enterprises in the West of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Sweden and Finland. A new website www.mycreativeedge.eu,which will showcase the work of creative businesses, freelancers and recent graduates from across the four regions, will be launched during the Creative Summit.
